Supreme Pro Wrestling

I like to keep my PPV purchases to a monthly minimum in this Great Recession I decided to forgo No Way Out and support the Indy scene this past weekend.  While on the subject let me again remind you of the abundance of independent promotions in Cali.  You can easily get your wrestling fix in the Golden State, but I digress.  I found myself in Sacramento (at the invite of Ultragirl Brittany Wonder.  Thanx sista!) at the monthly Supreme Pro Wrestling show.  I love the fact that a large portion of the performers are graduates or trainers at SPW training school.  This turns it from simply a show into a full on showcase.  We must protect this house!!!....Excuse me.  Feeling it there.
My attention was caught from the start of the opening match, as it should be.  I was surprised and delighted that the show kicked off with Pro Wrestling Illustrated Indy Wrestler to Watch Perry Von Vicious. Despite the high spot of the match going to Brittany Wonder the win went to Von Vicious.  Solid match to kick off the show.  This match was followed up 15 minutes of pure innovation and creativity.  Funny what happens when you let guys have adequate time to tell a story with their match (talking to you WWE creative).  Between Virgil Flynn & D-Torch and the Code Warriors I had my locked my picks for most awesome ring attire and innovative move set of the night.  Video games and Power Rangers turned me into a 4th grader for a few minutes.  Thanks fellas.
Jr Kratos might have been in the mid-card but manage to grab the audience in a kung fu grip from the second he walked down the ramp.  If this recent grad of the SPW academy get a little more polish on his technique you could be looking at the next hot name in the industry.  If the E wants a do over on the Camacho character I know a guy.  My throwback mark out moment of the night......former ECW Tag-Team Champion Mustafa Saed.  Try not to make the X with your hands, I dare you.  Match of the night, hands down can be no one else but Cjay Kurz and Joe DeSoul!  SPW Extreme Title match with a randomly drawn gimmick.  Besides DeSoul having the coolest ring music of the show he provided the sickest spot of the evening.  These two  literally brought down the house, being that their match covered the entire building only ending with the loser being locked outside for a full 10 count.  Damn fine show gents!  Very rarely do I get nervous around mere mortals but I had to do a double take when the Reno Scum hit the ramp.  You ever get that sinking feeling that a meth lab is about to get robbed or some minorities are about to get beaten up?  That about describes my feelings during the match that saw The Reno Scum retain their SPW Tag-Team Titles.  In the SPW Championship main event match raining champ Bobby Hart held on to the biggest prize in the company.  The champ was overshadowed by his challenger Rik Luxury.  This dude oozes charisma and held the crowd for the entire match.
The show and the finished product of the Supreme Pro Wrestling Academy  get the  get the thumbs from this fan.  OVW could stand to send a few of their players out west to get an extra dose of heart before hitting the big stage.  Remember to keep your ears to the street and eyes on the web for the next indy show in your area.  Support the foundation.  Your favorite wrestler started somewhere.   Holla back
 ass-kickers!

The Burning 5

Oh shit!  Almost forgot I ran a blog for a minute.  I have neglected you my children.  There have been quite a few developments in these last few months and this shit has returned to a level of entertainment that I haven't seen since last year.  Yeah, I can hear the whiny, cynical Internet crowd now cooking up 10,000 reasons why this isn't true.  Screw you fuckin' killjoys!  For those of us that are still able to see the sun when we walk outside here are 5 more burning questions that have been sitting in the back of my mind for the last few days.

1. What was the point?
OK, so The Rock goes over on Cena at WM 28.  The the joy of some and the confusion of others.  Either way it happened and for those of us that believe we have watched enough wrestling to predict the future of all angles and booking.  If asked I would have put money on the loss to The Rock would be the perfect opening for a John Cena heel turn.  How perfect you turned your back on me for him and blah blah, bitch bitch.  But less than 24 hours later we saw John Cena once again thrown into the role of the underdog fighting the big bad former WWE Superstar that parlayed his wrestling fame into millions in other professions.  So now instead of Cena slowly "embracing the hate" (remember that?) he is now defending the honor of those in the WWE Universe.  The boys in the back that dedicate themselves.  Anyone that feels shunned in any way by those that left them to be without entertainment for 30 minutes until the next guy was given the top spot.  Soooo suddenly my theory of heel turn is blown out of the water.  The prospect of Brock Lesnar being back on the WWE roster smashed and John Cena now still being pushed as the ultimate baby face.  Not only that but a 10x WWE champion is being pushed as an underdog.  There was some confusion swirling around my head on this one thing that was for certain is Cena has stepped into the role marvelously.  Even those of you jaded bastards that saw The Miz winning the main event at WM 27 as a sign of the future and not a sign of the apocalypse will have to admit that  Cena has "brought it" during the last 2 PPVs.  Whether it was literally carrying The Rock after he gassed out 4 minutes into the match of getting bloodied and broken all up in a match with Brock Lesnar.  Did getting busted open by the former UFC champ prove his toughness?   Did vanquishing the evil MMA traitor put him back into the fans good graces?  Will smacking around the most hated man in the WWE seal the deal? Was it worth it to give Lesnar a huge payday to come back for 1 freakin' month?  Who the  hell knows?!  I'm a little smart to bet on the outcome of wrestling that i don't have a hand in booking.  HA!

2. Why didn't the Bella Twins hang around just a wee bit longer?
Pretty sure that this one can be attributed to bad timing.  I mean their contracts were up.  With the return of Layla to fill our need for fresh Diva faces it was an easy call.  But how sweet would it have been to just give them a contract extension for a short period of time?  Not to just enjoy the eye candy that is the Bellas but to see a story finally come full circle.  Anyone remember Kharma being belittled by the twins after announcing that she was with child last summer?  Wouldn't it have been so sweet to see Kharma be the cause for the Bellas leaving?  I mean shit, they did it to Michelle McCool.  Why not show the vindication of Kharma and let her run the Bella Twins out of town as she vowed to do?  Alas my pleas were ignored by the creative team.  Besides, if you were Nikki and Brie would you stay around longer just to get squashed?

3. Does Japan make you an international superstar?
I mean for real?  Just because you go to Japan and make a name for yourself as well as some good money does that elevate you from a mid-carder t main eventer in the USA?  I mean a legend like Mick Foley is well known for the blood soaked Japanese death matches but by no means was put in a top spot based on his Japanese reputation.   Even in this digital age and the wide availability of videos of these matches most fans have no idea what is done outside this country.  So what makes the powers that be in the WWE think that harping on his greatness in Japan would make us forget that the large guy in the Japanese robe is Prince Albert a.k.a A-Train?  Yes, because we see how well that helped the legend of John Laurinitis. C'mon Son!

4.  Can a change do you good?
In the case of Ryback......YES!  After the Nexus ran it's course and he suffered an injury the man known as Skip Sheffield (Yup!)  was retooled into a monster.  To be more exact, a machine.  First being allowed to mow down local jobbers he recently crushed for NXT alum and Nexus partner in crime Heath Slater.  Leading to a little confusion for those of us that thought he was booked as heel but to the enjoyment of the live crowd that once again was given the opportunity to chant GOLDBERG, GOLDBERG for the short duration of the match.  I think I could almost hear Vince McMahon cringing in the backstage area.

5.  Is TNA finally headed in the right direction?
I ask myself this every Thursday and still go to bed heartbroken.  Please let this be the time that they get it right.   After watching Queen Dixie flaunt her latest purchase on MMA Uncensored of all places I had to ask myself...WTF is Mo Luwal going to contribute to this product?  I still have a ray of hope with Bischoff being off of TV and the open challenges & gut checks at the end of the month.  But in the meantime I will continue to watch IMPACT despite it feeling like a part time job and pray for the best. Dear Lord help me.

Hopefully my questions sparked a little flame in your mind unless of course you had these same thoughts (freaky right?)  Until then keep your eyes on the screen and ears to the street because I got  feeling some cool shit might be about to fall out of the sky.  Until we meet again doo-rags!

SLAMMED

How much more praise could I give these guys while in an upright position?  Hoodslam once again brought the house down this past Friday night, in Oakland.  If you can't get to the Bay Area, please check these guys out on Youtube.  You could probably stand a timeout from following Jersey Shore news.  I was pleasantly surprised upon walking through the door to find a fat kid's dream.  Cupcakes and cookies being sold by exotic dancers.  Why is the first time I have ever encountered this?  Thank you goes to the hard working ladies of The Lusty Lady in San Francisco (check out Live Nude Girls Unite to hear their story).  This show pulled out the big guns for the Drinko de Mayo (yes you read it right) celebration.  Elevated cameras in the middle of the audience to catch all the action.  Live music intermission, roving photography, superstar guest and did I mention strippers with cupcakes?  I love seeing an Indy promotion on the rise.  American dream at it's finest!  Not only was the crowd treated to a dance off featuring former WWE Diva and TNA Knockout Shelly Martinez but I popped a serious "nerd boner" when She Hulk made her Hoodslam debut.  How could it get better?  The main event of course!  Survivor Series style match up with both teams captained by on of the Stoner Brothers.  This angle is quickly become one of the most compelling in Hoodslam and will continue next month.  This shit is deeper than Mob Wives, LOL!  All in all excellent show once again.  Big shout to Johnny Drinko for making  the Drinko de Mayo celebration all that is was advertised to be.  A drunken bloodbath.  If you are still sleeping on these guys you need to wake up and spilled beer.  This shit is real!  I will most definitely be back next month and I suggest you follow.  Holla back rainbow rolls!

HOODSLAM

It really doesn't seem like it was a month ago(maybe because I spent 2 weeks on leave) but it's that time of the month again.  NO! Not check day asshole.  It's Muthafuckin' HOODSLAM!  I once again have my reason to venture down to the Metro and enjoy the shenanigans.  I didn't manage to weasel my way out of work on Friday as I have the prior months but I will escape with enough time to make it to the show.  Luckily they have a 9 p.m. start (CPT that is).  I plan on being ringside with the flipcam to catch the action this weekend and I suggest you have your ass in the house too.  These guys do not disappoint.  Holla back,  stinkfingers!

I Still Know What You Did Last HOODSLAM!

I know, I know.  This was supposed to be up days ago.  Gimmie break, I'm on the road.  Traveling was quite the pain in the ass due to weather delays.  Delays that caused several passengers to be stuck in various airports waiting on flights to Dallas.  Just long enough to develop serious cases of b.o.  Grown women have enough products available to prevent them from smelling like a 3rd grader after recess!  Enough of that shit though, let' talk about Friday.
I had the pleasure of attending the HOODSLAM 2nd anniversary show, I Still Know What You Did Last Hoodslam.  As you might be aware, I have sipped the HS Kool-Aid.  Tall glass of purple stuff!  I must admit that I have been hooked in.  I am a huge fan of people being allowed to work and grow their craft and these guys are doing just that.  Breathing new life into this game instead or trying to reanimate dead horses (did some one say Eric Bischoff?).  Trust me, this is nothing like what those guys are force feeding the fans.  These guys live by the love/hate rally cry FUCK THE FANS!
The 2nd anniversary show was headlined by the Brock Lesnar Memorial(for some reason) Lethal Lottery Tag Team Tournament.  Now I tend to be a fan of a good singles match but when done the right way tag team wrestling can be epic.  Especially when it ends with an over the top battle royal, which is the the only proper way to settle a dispute according to the Geneva Conventions.  Not only did I get to see the HS favorites battle it out but got the debut of Scorpion.  I do believe that I marked out a little bit when he hit the ring.  Screw you!  Any guy the was between the ages of 8 and 16 during the mid 90's would have lost their shit when he hit the ring.  I also  had the pleasure to witness my first female Hoodslammer.  Not only did Brittany wonder take bumps on par with the fellas but used what I have learned is a very well known posterior to her advantage.  Serious weapon!  Type of booty you shoot dice across.  But moving on.  I learned that the best way to kill  a zombie gorilla is to put him through a flaming table.  Possibly the spot of the night.  Still hard to tell.  There were some serious high spots that night.  Don't believe me?  Check the Youtube page (link on the bottom).
This show was every bit as good as advertised.  Not to mention I got to see how entertaining "The" Brian Kendrick can really be without the TNA leash on. Speaking of unleashed, former WWE Superstar Sinn Bodhi(Kizarny) got to open up the bag of tricks that he was forced to keep closed by McMahon, Dunn, Laurinitis or whoever.  I never got to see the Samurai sword on SMACKDOWN dammit!  I must say I was quite entertained by the sideshow as well as the in ring performance.  The night also saw a title change hands.  After Guile successfully  defended his title he was challenged by the winner of the Brock Lesnar Lethal Lottery(Money in the Bank style).  Surprises everywhere, you know.
Seriously, the show kicked ass.  Apparently it's been kicking ass for 2 years and I'm just late to the party.  This is what Indy is supposed to be.  Get off you ass and support.  Try looking up wrestling events on Google instead of Real Housewives gossip or whatever the hell it is you're watching.  This is developing talent, grinding it out and honing their craft.  Not some jack ass at a bodybuilding competition that gets  a contract thrown at his face.  This is what keeps this industry that I love thriving.  Respect to HOODSLAM, Action Coast Empire, GLCW, Windy City Wrestling and those that do this for love of the game and entertainment of the fans.  Much Love !  Until next time skullcrakers!

HOODSLAM

Friday, April 6 I will be back in Oakland for one of the baddest shows in the Bay area.  HOODSLAM XX is going down this weekend and my ass will be right back in the front row doing the FTF fist pump!  I lost my Action Coast Empire V-card last month at HOODSLAM XIX and have been chomping at the bit to get back to this show.
Needless to say I was pleased with the product.  I always take the production value of Indy shows for granted.  They don't have the budgets, manpower or arenas that the big boys are working with.  Usually these shows can be made or broke by the in ring talent and nothing else.  Not so in this case. Not only does the talent bring it in between the ropes but I was blown away by the attention to detail in this production.  From the in ring gear, to geek friendly gimmicks(primary customers of the Indy world, LOL), live band and some serious promos.  At times I was floored by the mic work going on.  It made me wonder why I had to hear Dolph Ziggler twice a week when this only goes down once a month.
Despite the rally cry being Fuck The Fans, this was one of the most fan friendly shows I've seen.  Almost gave me that old ECW, XPX feel.  There was no ringside barriers or security guards keeping me away from the action.  You might call it dangerous, I call it entertainment!  They even have a play by play team to call the action and clue the newbies in on the back stories.  I knew the history of all the feuds taking place.
Alright, enough of the boring section of the praise and to the meat.  I was beginning to sound like the first hour of the Academy Awards(who gives a fuck about Best Art Direction?).  This show was off the fuckin' chain!  It wasn't Steamboat vs. Savage technical or an Angle clinic in there but that shit had me hooked all night.  How often do you get to be 2 feet away from a high spot?  How often does your guest almost get squashed by a guy in a green skull mask (sorry Stacie) ?  I mean there is a guy dressed like Mega Man and a Chupacabra for Christ's sake!  Where else do you find entertainment like that?  On second thought I'm pretty sure that was happening some where on the other side of the bridge that night.  I saw some performances that would put what TNA passes off as X-Division to shame.  Chupacabra, Juice Lee, Ryu, Sheik gave performances to make you stop and take notice.  I am salivating to see how they show out when a former X-Division champ is in the house.  Former TNA/WWE Superstar "The" Brian Kendrick will be in the building at HOODSLAM XX! Already adding to a roster consisting of former WWE, Tough Enough and ECW competitors.  This shit is gonna be sick.  You can find me in the front row drinking the Kool-Aide this Friday in Oakland.  If you are anywhere near the Bay his weekend I suggest you have your ass there.  You have no idea what you have been missing.  I will be back with a full breakdown of the show plus the Burning 5 this weekend.  Until we meet again headbangers......
